Iedere stof heeft zo zijn eigen voorbereiding nodig. De ene stof was je wel van te voren en de andere niet.

Every fabric needs his own preparation. Sometimes you need to wash it and sometimes not

 

	Aida is een soort canvas met meerdere draden tussen elke gat, vaak drie. Het is meestal gemaakt van katoen en het komt in stofbreedtes van 18"(46 cm) tot 54"(137 cm). Dit is geweven met meestal 14 tot 18 gaatjes per inch (2.57cm)  voor kruissteek werk. Er zijn ook stoffen van 6 tot 20  count (ct) beschikbaar. De count (ct) van de stof is het aantal blokje (of kruisjes) per inch. Hoe groter het getal hoe fijner het eindresultaat is. Meest geliefde maten zijn: 14 ct, 16 ct en 18 ct. AIDA-stof was je niet van te voren, omdat anders de gaatjes verdwijnen of vervormen. A kind of canvas with several strands between each hole, often three. This is also known as Java Canvas, Fancy Oatmeal and Toile Colbert. It is usually made of cotton and it comes in widths of 18" to 54". This is sewn in every hole (one over one) with usually 14 to 18 holes per inch (linear) for cross stitch, but there are also 6 to 20 counts available. The count of the fabric is the number of blocks (or stitches) to the inch, so the higher the count, the finer (and smaller) the finished design. The most popular count is 14, but 16 and 18 are often used as well. AIDA fabric is used not washed, because the holes will be deformed or disappeared.
	'Evenweave' ook wel aftelbare stof genoemd is ook populair voor borduurwerk. Het is een losjes geweven stof met één gaatje tussen één enkele draad. Gebruikelijk is om het over 2 te borduren, dus is het lastig om de kruisjes goed op de zelfde hoogte te krijgen. Evenweave is a fabric popular for cross stitch. It is a loosely woven fabric with a hole between each single thread. Normally it is stitched over two threads, so great care is required to get the stitches to line up correctly.
	Jobelan (ook evenweave) bestaat uit 51% katoen en 49% viscose (kunstzijde) Jobelan (also Evenweave) is mix of 51% cotton and 49% viscose (artificial silk).
	Lugana (ook evenweave) 52% katoen 48% viscose Lugana (also Evenweave) 52% cotton and 48% viscose
	Zelf geverfde stoffen, liever ook niet wassen, daar de kleurechtheid hier nogal van te lijden heeft. Resultaat is dus gokken. Hand painted fabric, preferable do not wash it. The result is unpredictable since most dies are not wash stable.
	Linnen stoffen wel wassen, in verband met het wegwerken van de vouw en de krimp. Linnen is gemaakt van vlas en is derhalve een natuurproduct, waardoor de draaddikte niet constant is. Linen fabric must be washed to get rid of the winkles and shrinkage. Linnen is made out of flax and is a natural product, which means that the thread is not constant in thickness. 1. maak de linnen stof nat met koud water wet the linen with cold water 2. rol de natte stof losjes in een even grote droge handdoek roll the wet fabric loosly in an even sized towel 3. leg de rol 24 uur in de vriesla of vrieskist leave it for 24 Hr in the freezing drawer of the refrigerator 4. 1 uur bij kamertemperatuur laten liggen en daarna voorzichtig uitrollen lay it down for 1 Hr at room temperature and carefully unroll it 5. platstrijken met een handdoek eronder iron it with a towel underneath it 6. inspannen en beginnen maar frame it and start with it
	Belfast Linnen wordt meestal geborduurd met 2 draden. Alhoewel Belfast Linnen 32 draden per inch heeft, borduren we het alsof het was 16 ct. Uw patroon kan zeggen 'over twee' (dat wil zeggen, 2 draden stof en 2 draden zijde). De linnen draden in Belfast Linnen zijn opzettelijk ongelijke in diameter. In een ongeborduurd stukje stof kan deze variatie lijken op gebreken, maar het geeft uw werkstuk persoonlijkheid. Beginner suggesties: Hoewel het niet moeilijk borduurt, is linnen weefsel gewoonlijk niet aanbevolen voor uw eerste project (Aida zou een betere keuze zijn). Belfast Linen is usually stitched over 2 threads. So even though Belfast Linen is 32 threads per inch, it stitches as though it where 16 count. Your pattern may say 'over two' (that is, stitch over 2 threads); or '2 by 2', or '2 over 2' (that is, stitch 2 strands of floss over 2 fabric threads). The linen threads in Belfast Linen are intentionally uneven in diameter. In an unstitched piece of fabric this variation may look like flaws, but it is what gives your finished piece personality. Beginner suggestions: Although not difficult to stitch on, linen fabric is usually not recommended for your first project (aida would be the best choice for a first project)

Voorbereiden van de borduurzijde / Preparation of the skein

	Zoek de kleurnummers van het project bij elkaar collect the color numbers of the project
	Nummer de 'bobbins' met het kleurnummer Number the bobbins
	Wind de streng op de 'bobbin' wind the thread on the bobbin
	Ik gebruik bij voorkeur de Paco draadorganisator met per kleur een naald, nr 28. I prefer to use the Paco Thread organizer and for each color a needle (nr 28)

Omdat het origineel (the stitchmaster) niet voldoet voor grote borduurramen, heb ik mijn vader een stevige borduurtafel laten maken. Zoals je op de foto kunt zien is hij gemaakt van wat houtrestanten uit de schuur, maar hij voldoet prima, mede door de met vleugelmoeren instelbare hoogte. With the original frame stand (the Stitchmaster) it was not possible to use large frames. So I asked my father to make a more rigid and bigger stand. You can see on the picture that he had used some leftovers from the garage, but it does the job. He used wing nuts to make the stand adjustable in height.

Als je je werk op het borduurraam hebt gespannen, leg ik het los op de tafel. Dit in verband met het aan en afhechten. Op de bovenste plank kan ik ook mooi de draadorganisator kwijt. When framed I let it loose on the stand. This is easier for the tie-off work. On the top shelf I can put the Thread organizer.
